General Questions

How does it work?

1. Collect your old photos, slides, and negatives from around your house and fill out the order form on this website.

2. Place your memories in a box and mail them to Beckyscan.

3. We return your photos just like you sent them AND give you a DVD (or CD) with all your photos in digital format.

Why should I have Beckyscan digitize my photos?

Your pictures and memories are priceless. We at Beckyscan know that. We also know that no other photo scanning service out there will provide you with better service or value. Your photos will be processed by one of our technicians, all of whom have a bachelor’s degree in a photography or design related field. We use only professional-grade scanners and the best photo editing software available.

Why can't I scan my photos myself?

Using your own scanner to scan in multiple photos can be extremely time consuming and normally results in less than optimal scans. At Beckyscan, our skilled photo technicians use professional scanners that create high quality scans. We also process your photos using editing software to make your photos look their best.

How long does it take?

Once we receive your photos it typically takes 12 days or less for us to process your images and transfer them to digital format. If you need them sooner, please let us know.

What types of images and media do you digitize?

We currently scan print photos, 35 mm negatives, and slides. Photos can range in size from 2 x 2.5 to 8.5 x 11 inches.

Is it safe? How safe is it to ship my photos?

We know how important your memories are, so rest easy; your pictures are safe with us. We guarantee your pictures will never leave our Brooklyn facilities and will only be handled by Beckyscan team members. For all our mail orders, we ship with only the best: UPS and FedEx. Photo, Negative, & Slide Scanning Questions

How much does it cost?

Scanning costs depend on quantity, resolution, and size. Please take a look at our SERVICES page to see pricing for our scanning services.

What types of images do you not scan?

We do not scan copyrighted images (unless you have permission of use), nor do we scan images containing illegal content. If you are not sure about your image, give us a call.

What photo restoration services do you offer?

During the digital transfer process, we restore all pictures with minor damage free of charge. This includes color correction, red-eye filtering, and removing dust and scratches.

We also offer intensive photo restoration for more damaged prints and negatives. One of our skilled photo artists will use the latest in computer software to restore your image. This can be a time consuming and intensive process and may require digitally creating lost information on the photograph. For more information, please email us at restore@beckyscan.com or call us at 1-800-522-0131

What resolution do I need and what is DPI?

DPI stands for "Dots Per Inch" and is a measurement of how clear a photo looks when it is printed. A typical photograph that you have at home has a resolution of 300 DPI. If we scan in your photo at 300 DPI, you'll be able to print copies with no quality loss. However, if you wish to "zoom in", "blow up", or "crop" your photo, the "Dots Per Inch" will become less and printed copies can look grainy. If you plan to resize your photos, we recommend opting for us to scan them in at a resolution of 600 DPI, which lets you blow them up to twice their size with no quality loss.

JPEG or TIFF?

JPEG and TIFF are computer file types. JPEG files take up less room on your computer and are easier to manage. However, JPEGs can appear grainy if heavily edited in a photo editing program. TIFFs are larger and uncompressed files.

We recommend JPEGs for general use (online viewing and basic reprinting).

We recommend TIFFs for expert use (resizing and editing photos).

Should I have my photos saved on a CD or DVD?

We recommend having your photos saved on DVDs unless your computer does not have a DVD-ROM drive (most computers do). We use only 24 karat gold Archival Quality DVDs and CDs that resist the effects of temperature, humidity, and oxidation. These disks keep your scanned photo files safe for more than 100 years!

How do you organize the image files on the CD or DVD?

We scan in your photos in the same order that we receive them and we save them under sequentially numbered file names. To make sorting through your scanned pictures easier, we recommend opting for an Image Reference Album. The printed and bound album contains small thumbnail images of your pictures along with unique file numbers so you can quickly find the photo(s) you’re looking for on your disk.

DVD Movie Slideshow Questions

What is a DVD Movie Slideshow?

A DVD Movie Slideshow is a slideshow of your pictures made to play on your television (or computer). How do I add music to my DVD Movie Slideshow?

You can add a personalized soundtrack to your DVD Movie slideshow. When you send us your photos, include your music CD and mark the tracks you would like to play during the DVD Movie Slideshow.

Will I be able to play the DVD Movie Slideshow in my DVD player?

Almost all home DVD players have the capability to play our DVD Movie Slideshows. If you are concerned about compatibility with your player, email us your player’s make and model number and we’ll let you know.
